A mother claims a man walked up to her daughter and exposed himself at the bus stop.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A mother claims a man exposed himself to her daughter at a bus stop Wednesday morning.
Jessica Chavis told First Coast News she sat at the bus stop with 10-year-old daughter at the Hyde Park Elementary bus stop Wednesday morning, awaiting the summer academy bus. Chavis told FCN she had to return home.
"Are you going to be OK by yourself," Chavis asked her daughter Wednesday morning. Her daughter replied, "yeah, I'll be okay, momma."
Within minutes Chavis said her daughter ran home, crying, and screaming that a man walked up to her and exposed his private parts. Chavis called police.
"Come to find out, he walked up to her, he walked off, went and used the rest room in the corner of the school," Chavis said. "Came back over to her, grabbed his self, asked her 'you want some?' Offered her a cigarette, and then he said 'hit me up tomorrow, baby, you going to be up here?"
A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office incident report said the suspect, whom Chavis has seen before, went in and out of the bushes and walked past the child holding onto his genitals, but did not have it exposed. The report said he was holding onto (his genitals) through his pants.
At the bus stop, there is a sign saying in part, "Parents are responsible for the supervision of students at all bus stops."
"I understand that I'm not holding the school responsible. I'm holding this man responsible," Chavis said. "I don't recommend ever leaving your child by themselves. Like I said, I felt horrible."
Chavis said she'll be with her child from now on and she'd like to see an officer ride by or be at the stop until the person is caught. A JSO spokesperson said they could ask the investigating unit about increasing patrols in that area.
FCN did a quick search. Within one mile of the school are more than a dozen sex offenders.
"Even if he's not a sex offender, he still needs to have something done to him," Chavis said.
JSO is investigating. They have no suspects yet, nor have they made any arrests.
The police report describes the man as 6-feet to 6-feet-1 inch tall and weighing between 140 to 150 pounds. He is described as having natural short hair, no shirt, blue jeans and a black back pack. The report said the man is missing his two front, upper teeth. The report said Chavis, her boyfriend and the child have all seen previously seen the man walking in the area.
