TAMPA, Fla. -- A middle school student in central Florida faces charges after finding a gun while walking to school and deciding to bring it with him.

The 6th grade student at Monroe Middle School was walking to school on Thursday when he said he saw a handle sticking out of a white sock, police said. He picked it up and discovered it was a gun.

He brought the gun to school and showed it to friends, police said. Eventually a student heard about it and told a teacher who then notified the administration and the school resource officer. The school resource officer searched the student's backpack and found the revolver.

The student was charged with possession of a gun on school property, a felony.
