JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office narcotics detective was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with petty theft after he allegedly stole a $49 supplement from a gym.
According to Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt, JSO employee Julio Cerpa allegedly took a supplement from Bailey's Gym on Merrill Road earlier in February.
Cerpa was stripped of his police powers, gun and badge and reassigned to telephone duties in a different department of JSO for the misdemeanor offense, Senterfitt said.
Senterfitt said video footage shows Cerpa in the product area of Bailey's Gym scoping out the area before grabbing a supplement and ducking behind a counter out of view of the camera. When Cerpa came back into view, the supplement was no longer in his hands.
Senterfitt said he is very disappointed.
"We have to have the public's trust and it's disappointing when the people that we have out there to uphold the law are breaking the law," Senterfitt said.
Cerpa told JSO detectives that he told the Bailey's employee at the counter to put the supplement on his account, but Senterfitt said the video clearly shows he never even looked the the employee.
Cerpa's Concise Officer History notes that he has had 11 citizen complaints filed from 2007 to 2013. Cerpa was hired in 2006.
"When we find that we've done something wrong we treat them just like we treat everybody else and we arrest them for it," Senterfitt said.
Cerpa was held on $500 bond.
