ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- A tow truck driver handling a disabled vehicle on the interstate was hit and killed by a tractor trailer early Saturday, authorities said.

The tow truck driver was responding to a service call on the shoulder of I-95 north of State Road 16 just after 3 a.m. when he was hit by a tractor trailer driven by Mason Lewis Bryant of Macclenny, according a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian, identified as Kit Irwin Tappen, was flown to UF Health Jacksonville, a spokesperson for St. Johns County Fire Rescue told First Coast News. Tappen, 41, later died, troopers said.

The accident remains under investigation.
