CHANNELVIEW, Texas — An elderly woman who complained about construction noise was arrested after she held authorities at bay for about an hour Thursday.
Harris County Sheriff's Deputy constables surrounded Eleouise Adcock's home after the 90-year-old complained of ongoing construction near her home, officials said Thursday afternoon.
The standoff began around noon and views from a news helicopter showed the woman on her back porch with a shotgun for more than an hour.
Officers said the
oman point her weapon at construction workers and then at the first deputy on the scene.
"I knew she was going to be on the news eventually," said neighbor Ralph King.
The standoff came to an end after 1 p.m. when deputies approached the home and surrounded the woman on her porch. She was taken into custody without incident.
"She's hard to get along with," said King. "It's her way or no way."
It wasn't the first time the woman had complained. Construction workers told deputies she'd pointed the gun at them before.
"Today she got a little more excited and angry about it," said Sheriff's Deputy Thomas Gilliland.
Neighbors said Adcock has been upset about construction for some time. She's lived in the same house for 46 years and now barge construction companies surround her small house.
"She just doesn't want to sell," said King. "Her husband built that house. That's where she wants to stay."
Adcock was taken away in an ambulance, and deputies said she will undergo a mental health evaluation. No charges are expected to be filed.
"It's a little nerve-wracking," said Sharlene Hathorn, a neighbor who lives a few doors down. "We've got a lot of elders around here and mommas with babies."
