Eva Samkova was the wire-to-wire winner of the women's snowboard cross event on Sunday and did so while boarding with a twirly, 1920s-villain mustache painted on her upper lip.
The 20-year-old from the Czech Republic went the patriotic route with the Olympic face painting, opting for the colors of the Czech flag on the faux nose-tickler. She says it's for luck. When asked why she started rocking the mustache, which she's been doing for three years, Samkova responded, "I wanted to have fun."
So, basically, this gold-medal winner sported a painted mustache because mustaches are awesome (and so is Tom Selleck).
Semkova didn't wear the moustache during the time trials Sunday morning — when she posted the fastest time — but it was added to her face before the quarterfinals. She won that heat, and then the semifinals and led nearly all of the final as well.
She screamed and danced and cheered through seemingly every minute of her big day. Live video from her helmet camera also played on the jumbo screen at the base of the stadium as she rode — so thousands of fans at the extreme park stadium could see what she saw as she flew down the mountain at around 30 mph.?
