FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. -- Deputies in Flagler County will be stepping up their patrols of distracted driving starting April 10th.

The countywide campaign will mostly target behaviors like texting while driving.

"Our deputies will be patrolling the county watching for distracted drivers. The goal is to make our roadways safer and ultimately save lives," said Sheriff James L. Manfre.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration estimates that 10,000 people are killed each year because of distracted driving.

It is against the law to text while driving in Florida, though it is only a secondary offense.
